Why This Matters
Chances are, you’ve likely experienced losing files and folders or know someone else who has. You might have felt that moment of panic when you “thought” you lost files or folders (or the entire computer). It can be tragic and devastating especially if that was your only copy. The main reason for backing up your data is to save important files and folders if your system crashes, you get “hacked”, power surges, computer fails or if your computer is lost or stolen. You might also need to provide backups for tax and audit purposes, archive information, legal reasons etc. Backed-up information can also streamline operations with development of yearly archives. There are multiple ways to backup your files and folders. You may choose an external hard drive or USB, on the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, Box etc), or have backup software like “Time Machine”. Depending on your computer type (PM or MAC) and operating system, the instructions can vary. Having a clear backup strategy should be part of your cyber or digital hygiene. It shouldn’t be done just once a year. Depending on your needs, there are two types of backups you can perform:
- Partial Backup: Only important files and folders and nothing else.
- Full Backup: A complete “clone or copy” of your entire system.
If in doubt about how to go about backing up your files and folders it is recommended you contact an IT company or service provider to help walk you through the steps. Make sure you get three quotes to ensure you are getting the most fair price. You also want to ensure your website is also backed up or on a backup schedule. We recommend working with a service provider or your website hosting service to ensure your site is being backed up on a regular scheduled basis. There are also many third-party tools/apps to help with the facilitation of the back up process.
